Signs Your Lawn Needs Recovery Mowing, Not Just a Regular Mow
A handful of practical signs that a lawn has crossed the line from "needs a mow" to "needs a proper recovery job."
Most lawns just need a regular mow. But there’s a point where a section has been left long enough that a standard mow — cutting straight down to normal height in one pass — will do more harm than good. Here’s how to tell which situation you’re actually in.
The grass is knee-high or worse
If you can’t see the soil at all and the grass has gone to seed (visible seed heads on top), a single low cut will shock the lawn and can leave it patchy or bare. This needs a staged approach — see overgrown lawn recovery.
It’s been more than 2–3 months since the last mow
Time is a reasonable proxy when you’re not sure. Auckland’s growth rate means 2–3+ months of neglect during spring or summer is usually enough to move a lawn out of “just mow it” territory.
There’s visible thatch or matting at the base
If the grass has flopped over and matted down rather than standing upright, mowing alone won’t fix it — the matted layer needs to be addressed or it’ll choke new growth underneath.
You can feel uneven, lumpy ground through the grass
Long grass hides the actual surface. If mowing at normal height would mean the mower deck is riding up and down over hidden unevenness, that’s a sign the section needs a careful first pass rather than a standard cut.
What “recovery” actually changes
The main difference isn’t the equipment — it’s the approach. Cutting height comes down in stages instead of one pass, so the lawn isn’t stripped of more than roughly a third of its blade length at once. It sometimes takes a follow-up visit a few days later to bring it the rest of the way down. It’s slower than a regular mow, but it’s the difference between a lawn that recovers and one that’s left damaged.
If any of the above sounds like your section, get in touch with a rough idea of how long it’s been and we’ll tell you what’s involved.
